KIA ORA & G’DAY!

We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2023

Down Under Berlin Film Festival.

Many films in this year’s program bring to light, in their individual way, the diverse stories, struggles, and triumphs of modern Australian and New Zealand societies. Through the power of cinema, we aim to amplify unheard voices, fostering understanding, empathy, and connection.

We are delighted to continue to champion emerging film directors through our festival platform. New Zealander Michelle Savill will open this year’s edition with her debut feature Millie Lies Low followed by a Q&A. Our program also puts a spotlight on two first-time Australian feature film directors: Nadi Sha, who will attend the German premiere screening of Everything In Between; and Tyler Atkins whose feature Bosch & Rockit will screen for the first time in Berlin.

The festival aims to bring attention to stories rarely seen on German cinema screens. Kāinga is an anthology of stories of the Asian diasporas living in New Zealand. Whilst Dig Deeper gives us an alternative look at the contemporary art scene in Australia, Dipped In Black (Marungka Tjalatjunu) takes us on a journey as an Anangu Yankunytjatjara man escapes the city life to return to Country for spiritual healing.

Don’t miss our first ever Series Spotlight where audiences will be treated to two television pilots never before aired in Germany: New Zealand’s ‘Kura and the Australian mini-series Significant Strangers.

Our closing night film is the award-winning Australian documentary A Fire Inside presented with the Australian Embassy. A truly moving and cinematic insight into the devastating bushfires that took place in 2019 and 2020.

Join us for a captivating lineup of films that explore the rich tapestry of cultures, experiences, and perspectives that make the Antipodes so beautifully diverse. We hope you enjoy this cinematic journey with us. Check out our full program here! Thank you for being a part of the 2023 Down Under Berlin Film Festival!
