Official welcome note by the former Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit
“This September, the curtain will be rising on the Down Under Berlin – Australian Film Festival for what is now the fourth time. On behalf of the film capital Berlin, I would like to welcome all of the fans of Australian cinema – and the new fans this festival will make – to Moviemento in Kreuzberg.
Down Under Berlin is taking its place in the tradition of great film festivals in Berlin.
Over four days, the festival will be building a bridge between the continents. Its cross-genre program offers something for audiences of all ages and, at the same time, showcases a broad spectrum of filmmaking. Feature films, documentaries, shorts, and experimental films not only give us an idea of Australian cinematic art, they also make a distant continent accessible in many different ways. Sincere thanks go to the festival’s organizer, the dedicated non-profit organization Down Under Berlin, which, along with the films, has put together a varied supporting program of lectures, workshops, and concerts to round off these “Australian days.”
The festival’s focus this year is on “home” – or, in other words, everything that has to do with feeling at home. That puts the spotlight both on the lives of the indigenous population of Australia and New Zealand and on what’s old and new in this region’s filmmaking. Let me also point out that Australia’s filmmakers should certainly feel at home in Berlin, too, and the festival will prove that. I would like to wish all the participants every success and the audience many new impressions and thought-provoking experiences.”
