So- pies, right? Who doesn’t love them? Australian and Kiwi travellers and expats know the humble meat pie well, but it is surprising to find that they are not a staple in every bakery chain in Germany, bringing hot flaky pastry and meaty goodness to the people. This is one of the reasons why New Zealander and now Berlin local Josh Joblin-Mills and his wife opened up Oma Marnie’s Pies in the first place. Looking to bridge a gap in the fast-food market in Berlin which commonly consists of currywurst bratwurst and Doners, they embarked upon the task to bring this NZ and Aussie classic, to the people!

1.What’s so good about pies?
Hot, hearty and easy to eat. There’s a flavour for everyone!
2.Where did you grow up?
Whanganui, New Zealand in the great outdoors with my three brothers and two sisters.
3.What are your favourite films of all time?
So many! The Godfather movies and Pulp Fiction would be a good start.
4.Why do you think it is that meat pies aren’t already a staple in the German bakeries here?
This is still a mystery to me! German bakeries seem to revolve around bread and French inspired pastries that are mostly sweet. For a nation that eats so much meat and pastry, they really haven’t done well at putting it together. Don’t forget the vegetarian and vegan pies, which are a must in Berlin!
5.What did you want to be when you grew up?
I’ve grown up? I would still love to get involved in marine conservation in New Zealand one day.
6.Is your clientele a nice 50/50 of folks from down under and Germans, or something more eclectic?
Yeah, there’s a good mix. It depends on where in Berlin we are running an event, certainly, when we started we got the attention of expats pretty quick, but the locals are warming to our Down Under inspired cuisine. It’s pretty addictive!
7.What are 5 words to describe yourself?
Hands-on, determined, optimistic, family man.
8.What’s your earliest film memory?
Either Masters of the Universe or watching The Lion King about 57 times with my cousins.
9.Are you a cinema or DVD and Netflix guy?
I’d rather be at the Cinema, but it can be a little hard with three young kids at home! It also really depends on the movie.
10.How important is collaboration amongst all the expat communities in Berlin?
The expat community was key in getting our business off the ground and spreading the word about what we do. I know how hard it is to start a business in a foreign language speaking country with a new product, so collaborating with like-minded people in a similar situation is not only vital for running the business itself but definitely helps keep you sane!
